CQC inspection readiness is becoming critical as regulatory activity rises across England. Providers across England are facing a new wave of CQC and Ofsted scrutiny, and CQC inspection readiness can no longer be assumed or delayed. The question is not whether an inspector will arrive — it is whether your service’s CQC inspection readiness is strong enough when they do.
| 1 in 3 SERVICES RATED REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT OR INADEQUATE | 72 hrs TYPICAL NOTICE GIVEN BEFORE A CQC INSPECTION | 1 Day IS ALL IT TAKES TO CHANGE YOUR RATING |
The Care Quality Commission has re-energised its inspection programme under the Single Assessment Framework. Ofsted has sharpened its focus on supported accommodation for 16 to 17 year-olds. For providers who have been quietly hoping for more time — that window is closing.
CQC Inspection Readiness: The New Regulatory Landscape
The inspection environment has fundamentally changed
The CQC’s transition to the Single Assessment Framework (SAF) has not simply changed the paperwork. It has changed the conversation. Inspectors are no longer ticking boxes against Key Lines of Enquiry in isolation — they are building a picture of your service over time, triangulating evidence from multiple sources: data submissions, notifications, feedback from people who use your service, and what they see on the day.
For Ofsted-registered providers — particularly those running children’s homes or supported accommodation for young people aged 16 to 17 — the picture is equally demanding. Ofsted’s Social Care Common Inspection Framework (SCCIF) has been applied with increasing rigour, and the bar for Outstanding has never been higher.
| THE REALITY CHECK MOST PROVIDERS ARE AVOIDING Most providers believe they are performing better than their evidence would demonstrate to an inspector. The gap between what a service does and what it can prove it does is where ratings are won and lost. A mock inspection does not find that gap on paper. It finds it in the same way a real inspection would — through observation, interview, and scrutiny of records. That is the point. |
WHAT A MOCK INSPECTION ACTUALLY IS
Not a rehearsal. A genuine stress-test of your service.
A mock inspection from Care Quality Support is designed to replicate, as closely as possible, the experience of a real CQC or Ofsted inspection. We do not come in to tell you what you want to hear. We come in to tell you what an inspector would find — before the inspector does.
Our consultants have direct, hands-on experience of CQC and Ofsted inspection methodologies. We understand not just what the frameworks require but how inspectors apply them in practice — what they probe, what they note, and what triggers further scrutiny.
| Outstanding providers do not simply meet the standard — they set it. A mock inspection is not about passing a test. It is about understanding, with complete clarity, exactly where your service stands against the highest level of expectation. — Godfrey Mushandu, Care Quality Support |
WHAT’S INCLUDED
A comprehensive inspection simulation — tailored to your service
Pre-Inspection Documentary Review
We scrutinise your policies, care plans, risk assessments, governance records, and staff files against the relevant CQC Quality Statements or Ofsted criteria — identifying gaps before we set foot on site.
On-Site Inspection Simulation
A full day on site replicating inspection-day conditions — including walkarounds, staff interviews, observation of practice, and review of operational records. Nothing is staged.
Staff and Manager Interviews
We interview registered managers, team leaders, and frontline staff using the same lines of questioning an inspector would deploy, assessing their understanding of values, safeguarding, and safe practice.
Rated Mock Inspection Report
A formal written report, structured against the five CQC Key Questions or Ofsted’s quality areas, with a provisional rating judgement, evidence summary, and a prioritised action plan.
Evidence Gap Analysis
We map your current evidence against what CQC or Ofsted would expect to see, identifying precisely which Quality Statements or inspection criteria need strengthening before the real thing.
Post-Inspection Debrief
A structured debrief session with the registered manager and leadership team — translating findings into an actionable improvement plan, with timescales and ownership assigned.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Built for providers who refuse to leave their rating to chance
Our mock inspection service is designed for three distinct groups of providers — each with different needs, but the same fundamental requirement: knowing the truth about where they stand.
New and recently registered providers
If you have been operational for under 18 months, your first CQC inspection is imminent. You have built your systems, trained your staff, and written your policies. A mock inspection will tell you whether that preparation is sufficient — or whether there are critical gaps that could cost you a Good or Outstanding rating from day one.
Providers preparing to move from Good to Outstanding
Outstanding is not a matter of doing more. It is a matter of doing the right things with consistency, creativity, and person-centred purpose — and being able to evidence all of it. Our mock inspection process is specifically designed to identify what separates a Good provider from an Outstanding one, and to give you a clear path to that destination.
Providers under pressure — with a Requires Improvement rating or enforcement action
If you are operating under an action plan, have received regulatory correspondence, or are managing the aftermath of a difficult inspection, a mock inspection provides an independent, objective assessment of your progress. It tells you — with confidence — whether your improvements are embedded and evidenced, or whether you remain at risk.
| In practice: a supported living provider in the East Midlands commissioned a mock inspection following a Requires Improvement rating. Our assessment identified that whilst frontline practice had genuinely improved, the governance documentation — particularly around MCA compliance and restrictive practice recording — remained insufficient to evidence that improvement. The registered manager had three months before the re-inspection. They used them wisely. — This is an example of the Care Quality Support approach |
FOR OFSTED-REGISTERED SERVICES
Children’s homes and supported accommodation — a distinct offer
Ofsted inspection is a different experience from CQC — faster, more intensive, and with a sharper focus on the lived experience of young people in your care. Our Ofsted mock inspection service is specifically designed for:
- Children’s homes regulated under the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015, assessed against the SCCIF quality areas: how well children are helped and protected, the quality and impact of leadership and management, and the overall experiences and progress of children and young people.
- Supported accommodation providers registered under the Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023, working with 16 to 17 year-olds. This is a relatively new registration category, and many providers are approaching their first full Ofsted inspection with limited certainty about what to expect. We bring that certainty.
Sector expertise. No generalists. No shortcuts.
Care Quality Support is not a generalist HR or training consultancy that has added inspection preparation to a catalogue. We are a specialist health and social care consultancy with over 20 years of applied experience across CQC-regulated domiciliary care, supported living, and Ofsted-regulated children’s services.
Our principal consultant, Godfrey Mushandu, has worked directly in compliance, governance, audit, and quality assurance across the full spectrum of regulated services in England. We understand what Outstanding looks like — not in theory, but in the day-to-day running of real services, under real pressure, with real people.
Every mock inspection we conduct is bespoke to your service, your registration type, and your current position against the relevant inspection framework. We do not deliver off-the-shelf checklists. We deliver an honest, expert, and actionable assessment — the kind that changes outcomes.
